Appearance: Tall and very slender, with long legs, a thin waist and wiry arms. Axel's bright red hair is his most noticable feature; he wears it gel'd back from his forehead in stiff, sharp spikes. He has pale skin and an angular face with a sharp jawline and cheekbones and a pointed chin. Black teardrop tattoos on his cheeks draw attention to his bright green eyes. Axel is almost never seen without a smile on his face, though you'd be hard-pressed to call it a friendly one. He wears a pair of black pants, black books, and a long, black, fitted leather coat that zips up from the bottom and comes with a concealing hood and a silvery chain.

Personality: Unabashedly scheming, Axel is not a particularly trustworthy character and has few qualms about manipulating the people and events around him for his own ends. As a Nobody, lacking a heart, he's unable to experience emotions and thus modifies his behavior based on what he thinks and desires rather than what he feels. Axel is arrogant and confident, believing in his own power--although he may pay lip service to others, he only truly recognizes Xemnas as being more powerful than him. However, he is neither hasty nor reckless and takes great pains to ensure that the people in his life know only as much about him as he wants them to know. He's incapable of true friendship or loving relationships, though he will pursue physical pleasure in the desire to experience something that is like love. He has no trouble playing roles and putting on masks when he needs to. Most of Axel's actions can be said to stem from his desire to preserve his own life and pursue experiences that remind him of what it was like to have a heart. Once in a while he finds himself acting for the benefit of other people, though this is a rare occurrence.

Abilities: Axel is capable of making people believe he's on their side and influencing them to do what he wants them to do. He's a good actor who can play at having emotions even though he doesn't actually feel them. Before his unexpected arrival in Manhattan, Axel was capable of creating and manipulating fire to any extent, from candle flames to infernos. He also possessed a pair of chakrams which he used both to help direct flame and as sharp weapons in their own right. Now Axel is chakramless and his power with fire had been greatly reduced: he can create and manipulate small bits of fire like a handful of flame--good for creating light and scaring off crab parasites--but it takes a great deal of concentration, and if he uses it too long the flame goes out and can't be rekindled for a day or two.

Weaknesses: As a Nobody, Axel is incapable of feeling emotion, though certain experiences remind him of what they were like. Because feelings such as love, compassion, and regret are removed from him beyond a purely intellectual level, his moral character is highly flawed and he can't have relationships beyond acquaintances with other people.

Manhattanite or outsider? Outsider

History: Created from the shell of a human being transformed into a Heartless, Axel was quickly brought into the folds of the Nobody society, Organization XIII. Although outranked by more than half the Organization's members, Axel was soon able to gain the trust of Xemnas, the Superior, who sent him to Castle Oblivion to keep an eye on Marluxia, Larxene, and the Nobodies who followed them. He discovered Marluxia and Larxene's plot to seize control of the Organization and pretended to join with them while manipulating events in Castle Oblivion to ensure their downfall. He assassinated Vexen when ordered by Marluxia, occassionally stepped in to guide Sora through the castle, and set Namine free to reveal to Sora that she had manipulated his memory. He later confronted Marluxia, intending to kill him despite Marluxia's attempt to use Namine as a shield, but was stopped by Sora's appearance. Soon afterwards he vanished from the castle and returned to Xemnas in the World That Never Was.

There he became acquainted with the thirteenth member of the Organization, Roxas, who came to be the closest person to a friend that Axel knew. Being with him reminded Axel of having a heart, and thus he strove to hold onto the experience as much as possible, mainly by sticking to Roxas like a burr. After Roxas's imprisonment in DiZ's virtual Twilight Town, Xemnas ordered Axel to bring him back or kill him. Axel infiltrated the program and attempted to remove Roxas from it without success; although he threatened several times to kill Roxas if he was unable to free him, he never actually did so. In the end Roxas merged with Sora and Axel abandoned his efforts, or so it seemed. Wanting to get his friend back from Sora, Axel kidnapped Kairi without Xemnas' knowledge in an attempt to lure Sora to him, but lost her to Saix, who brought her to the Organization.

In his brief encounters with Sora, Axel discovered that Sora, too, brought him close to feeling emotions and eventually abandoned his attempt to separate Sora and Roxas. Instead he decided to help Sora by opening a way into the World That Never Was and sacrificed himself in a suicidal attack against untold numbers of Nobodies so that Sora could make it through. As he lay dying in Sora's presence, Axel experienced something close to regret and asked Sora to apologize to Kairi for him for kidnapping her. As the words left his mouth Axel blacked out...but he it seemed he was not dead after all, as he suddenly found himself waking in an abandoned, ruined city.
